Brace yourself for another Deborah Coonts novel. Lucky O’Toole, the 30-something protagonist of this funny, sexy novel, is the daughter of the proprietor of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Las Vegas” and chief problem-solver of the fabulous Babylon Resort Hotel run by her father. Lucky’s boyfriend is a female impersonator who looks better in a dress than she does, and she is surrounded by other gorgeous men, including a gay film star, a hunky Australian private detective who is bedding one of her two assistants and a young police detective appropriately named Romeo who is dating the other, a young protege of Lucky’s whose name is, of course, Brandy Alexander.

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

As if all this isn’t enough, the entomologists who are gathering at the Babylon for their annual convention somehow manage to lose several million angry bees on the same day that what’s left of a woman known as a crooked bookmaker turns up in the shark tank at a nearby hotel. (There is no explanation why there would be a shark tank at a hotel in Las Vegas.)

What more can I say? Shenanigans ensue, surprises happen, and the good guys win in the end. This is hardly fine literature, but who cares?
